Priya Baskaran is a family lawyer who qualified in 2013 and joined Atkins Hope in 2015. Her specialism is in representing parents, grandparents and other relatives in care proceedings, and other public law children matters, such as discharge of a care order, contact with children in care and special guardianship proceedings. Priya undertakes the majority of her own advocacy. She is a Children Panel member which is a reflection of her expertise and experience in public law work.
In addition to public law proceedings, Priya also represents victims of domestic violence in obtaining protective injunctions. Priya has experience in representing parents in private law children proceedings, namely proceedings concerning where a child should live and how much time a child should spend with the non-resident parent.
Priya has obtained accreditation from Resolution as a specialist family lawyer in domestic violence and public law children work in January 2016. Resolution is a family law association which promotes a constructive and non-confrontational approach to family law matters.
- Represented both parents in a case where the Local Authority sought to remove a young baby from their care, further to their older children being permanently removed a short while before. Priya assisted the parents in highlighting the changes they had made since the earlier removal and the case successfully concluded with the child remaining in their care.
- Represented grandparents, who had been positively assessed as special guardians for their grandchild who was subject to proceedings. Priya assisted them in obtaining a suitable support package, as well as successfully making an application on their behalf to change the child’s surname so that the child could share her grandparents’ identity.
- Represented a client in obtaining a non-molestation order against a former abusive and violent partner. The matter concluded at a final hearing, where a protective order was made in favour of the client.
